Performance
Performance is the most important part of recorded music—often even more important than the song itself. A great performance of a throwaway tune can still be mesmerizing. As producers and engineers, our job is to create conditions where musicians can deliver those performances, and then capture them quickly and faithfully. Those moments are usually fleeting. You don’t want to be fumbling with settings and chasing sounds while the magic slips away.
These articles share the techniques I’ve picked up for getting better performances out of bands, solo artists, and even myself. It’s also the one part of production you never really “master.” Performance is as much about psychology and people management as it is about technical skill, which is why it’s the area I’m always experimenting with.
